Austin FC announced on Friday that the Club has loaned defender Charlie Asensio to USL Championship club Charleston Battery. Asensio joins the Battery on a season-long loan until the end of the 2022 season, with Austin FC retaining the right to recall the player at any time. Per Club policy, financial terms of the deal will not be publicized.
Austin FC selected Asensio in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft with the 35th overall pick, and the 22-year-old signed a contract with the Club on February 23. Prior to joining the Verde & Black, Asensio played four (4) seasons of collegiate soccer at Clemson University, recording nine (9) assists in 82 career appearances (79 starts) and winning the 2021 NCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship with the Tigers.
Asensio made his debut for Austin FC in the Club’s June 11 international friendly against C.F. Pachuca, coming on as a second-half substitute.
