Austin FC announced today that it has entered a partnership with Austin-based Freedom Solar, becoming the first MLS club in Texas with a local renewable energy partnership. Freedom Solar, Proud Partner of Austin FC, installed 134 high efficiency SunPower solar panels on the south building roof of Q2 Stadium, Austin FC’s $260 million state-of-the-art stadium.
“Our partnership with Freedom Solar will reduce our grid-based energy consumption and put us on a path to increased energy efficiency at Q2 Stadium,” said Austin FC President Andy Loughnane. “Austin FC strives to be environmentally conscientious members of our community, and Q2 Stadium’s sustainability is central to that commitment.”
“Austin FC has already become a treasured member of the Austin community and national leader among MLS teams in terms of sustainability initiatives and local fan support,” said Freedom Solar CEO, Bret Biggart. “As Freedom Solar continues to grow into a nationally recognized solar installer brand with deep roots in Austin, we believe this partnership is a great platform to emphasize the value of sustainable energy practices and energy independence for businesses at any scale.”
Freedom Solar, the leading residential and commercial solar provider in central Texas, completed Q2 Stadium’s first solar panel installation last month, moving the club closer to achieving its ongoing sustainability goals. The remotely monitored 50-kilowatt system, with an expected lifespan of 25 years, will generate more than 81,400 hours of on-site renewable energy annually. This installation will have the same CO2 emissions reduction effect as 950 trees, while generating enough electricity to power 10 homes for a calendar year.
