U.S. Soccer conducted the Third Round Draw for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Friday, and confirmed that Austin FC will face USL Championship club San Antonio FC at Toyota Field in San Antonio. The match will be the Verde & Black’s first in the historic American soccer tournament, which sees teams from professional, semi-pro, and amateur levels compete against one another in a single-elimination format.
Austin FC enters the 2022 U.S. Open Cup in the Third Round, alongside 16 other Major League Soccer teams. In total, ATXFC will need to win six (6) matches to win the Open Cup. The winning club receives a trophy, $300,000 in prize money, and a coveted spot in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.
While it’s Austin FC’s first-ever match in the historic tournament, many of the Club’s coaches and players have experience in the Open Cup. Head Coach Josh Wolff and Academy General Manager Tyson Wahl each won the Open Cup three (3) times as players, Assistant Coach Davy Arnaud won it once, and striker Maxi Urruti won it in 2016, scoring twice in the final.
The match will be played between April 19-21, with official date and kickoff time to be made public once available.
