In 2022, Austin FC finished as the top MLS team in Texas, claiming Copa Tejas as the first trophy in Club history. With a pair of victories over Houston Dynamo FC and a pair of draws against FC Dallas during the regular season, Austin won Copa Tejas: a trophy created by supporters and awarded annually to whichever team among Austin, Dallas, and Houston collects the most points-per-match from matches against one another.
The Verde & Black will look to defend that title in 2023, and with the MLS regular season schedule released, Austin, Dallas, and Houston fans now know the dates for the meetings against their intra-state rivals. Copa Tejas will be even bigger this year, with ATXFC playing three matches instead of two against each of its fellow Texan sides.
It won’t take long for Copa Tejas to get going. Austin travels to take on Houston on March 18, its fourth match of the regular season. Josh Wolff’s team then have two Lone Star State battles in a busy May, hosting FC Dallas on the 13th and facing the Dynamo in Houston once again on May 27.
Late June will be a pivotal period in deciding 2023’s Copa Tejas, as Austin plays both Dallas (June 21) and Houston (June 24) at home three days apart. Victories in those two matches at Q2 Stadium would put the Verde & Black in a strong position heading into Austin's final Copa Tejas fixture of the year, a tough road test against Dallas on August 26.
