A 96th-minute goal from Carter Manley saw Austin FC fall to a 2-1 defeat against San Antonio FC in the Club’s first-ever Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday night at Toyota Field.
The hosts gave a solid account of themselves throughout the first half. The two sides battled hard but genuine chances were hard to come by. The best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell the Verde & Black’s way in the 27th minute when Danny Hoesen got behind the defense. The forward's shot rebounded off the post and fell for Diego Fagundez, whose effort on the doorstep was somehow stopped amid a goalmouth scramble.
Fagundez was not to be denied though, and broke the deadlock less than two minutes into the second half. After receiving a pass from Sebastián Driussi, Fagundez slipped past his defender and fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net.
One of the USL Championship’s top teams, SAFC continued to push and found an equalizer through Elliot Collier in the 82nd minute. The match then went to extra time as neither side was able to find a winner in the closing stages of regulation.
San Antonio goalkeeper Jordan Farr made a quality save to keep Fagundez from restoring Austin’s lead in the 94th minute, and SAFC took the lead moments later via a header from Manley. ATXFC were unlucky not to find an equalizer of their own in the 110th minute when Felipe’s header glanced off the crossbar, and ultimately saw their Open Cup campaign come to an end on the night.
