The first half of Austin FC’s historic expansion has been one to remember. The Club has created memories that will last a lifetime not only for the players and coaches, but also for the dedicated fans and supporters that have devoted their time, energy and voice to the Verde & Black. With half the season officially completed, let's take a look back at our ten favorite moments since this season's first kick.
Inaugural Match
Austin FC started off its expansion season in tough confines, visiting 2019 Supporters’ Shield winners LAFC at Banc of California Stadium. The visitors took a 2-0 loss, but performed admirably, creating both chances and excitement in their first ever outing.
First Goal
Diego Fagundez’s name will forever be etched in the Austin FC record books. The 26-year-old midfielder and long-time MLS veteran scored the first goal in Club history on April 26 when he latched onto a cross on the back post and calmly placed it into the back of the net. He immediately gave a shout out to Austin FC supporters group Los Verdes as the goal leveled the score against the Colorado Rapids in the second half.
First Win
Thanks to Fagundez’s goal, Austin FC went on a run over the final 30 minutes against the Rapids. Cecilio Dominguez scored two more goals to lift the Verde & Black to a 3-1 victory -- the first in Club history.
Away Days
One of the most enduring images from the first couple of weeks of the season was the Austin traveling faithful that invaded Colorado and Nashville. The supporters stepped it up even more this past weekend when at least 700 Austin fans made the trip to Frisco to provide a welcoming environment for ATXFC.
Watch Parties
While Austin FC played its first eight matches on the road, the fans back home were still able to enjoy the matches. Hundreds of Austin fans got together at watch parties across the city to cheer on the Verde and Black.
MOC Surprise
It’s not only the team that needs practice. Before Austin’s first home match on June 19, supporters got together and did some practice before the San Jose Earthquakes visited Q2 Stadium. Part of the practice was attended by Austin FC part owner and Minister of Culture Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey was there at practice so on gameday Austin supporters weren’t surprised to see him walk out in front of them with a green suit and bongo, before leading them in a chant.
First Home Game
After McConaughey led the supporters in some chants, they unfurled an incredible tifo that paid tribute to the Austin community. Austin FC would go on to draw the Quakes 0-0 in the home opener, earning a point in the Club’s first home match and showing fans across the country that a new kind of sporting experience was on display in Austin.
Pride Night Tifo
Austin FC hosted Columbus Crew SC eight days later and before the match got underway, the supporters again showed why they are so special. They were able to put together a special Pride Night tifo that involved the entire section, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community.
First Home Goal
A sold-out Q2 crowd exploded when Jon Gallagher scored in the 28th minute and his goal was followed up by three more as the Verde & Black topped the Timbers 4-1 to get the first home win in Club history.
Rivalry Win vs. Houston
Soccer is built on rivalries and Austin FC got to take part in its first rivalry match on August 4 when Houston Dynamo FC visited Q2 Stadium. Austin got up on the Dynamo early and didn’t let up, beating its Texas rivals 3-2.
