Austin FC announced today the Club agreed to a new multi-year contract with midfielder Diego Fagundez. Fagundez’s new deal includes three (3) guaranteed years through the end of the 2025 season, with an option for the 2026 season.

“Having been with Austin FC since the beginning, I couldn’t be prouder of how far this Club has come in its first two years,” said Fagundez. “I’m thrilled to stay here and sign a new contract, and want to thank my family, teammates, coaches, and the incredible fanbase for all their support. This place has become like home and I’m confident that this team and community will achieve great things together.”

Fagundez, 27, joined Austin FC ahead of the Club’s inaugural season in 2021 and scored the first goal in Austin FC history on April 24, 2021 in a 3-1 away win over Colorado Rapids. He is the Club’s all-time leader in appearances with 70 across the regular season and playoffs, having featured in every match except one (1) in Austin FC history.

Fagundez is also the Club’s all-time leader in assists with 20. His 15 assists during the 2022 season were second-most in Major League Soccer, to go with six (6) goals scored including two (2) direct free kicks.

“Diego has been a foundational member of this Club and community since he first arrived in Austin,” said Austin FC Head Coach Josh Wolff. “He’s a quality player who wants to help our team achieve its goal. We’re delighted to have him extend his contract and thankful to our ownership group for making it possible.”

Fagundez is one (1) of only 13 players in MLS history to record at least 60 career goals and 60 career assists, a landmark which he reached on August 6, 2022. His 328 career MLS appearances rank 35th all-time and 12th among active players.

“Re-signing a player of Diego’s caliber is integral to our goal of establishing ourselves as a team that can compete for titles year in and year out,” said Austin FC Interim Sporting Director Sean Rubio. “He has been consistent and impactful through the Club’s first two seasons, and though only 27, brings over a decade of experience competing in the league. We wish to congratulate Diego on his new contract and are happy to have him remain with the Club for the foreseeable future.”

Before joining Austin FC, Fagundez spent his entire career with New England Revolution, for whom he initially signed as a Homegrown Player in 2010 at age 15. He made his MLS debut the following year as a 16-year-old, and went on to record 53 goals and 45 assists in 265 league games for the Revolution.
