Austin FC defender Julio Cascante was named to the Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday, with goalkeeper Brad Stuver selected to the Team of the Matchday bench for their performances in Austin’s 2-1 victory over Minnesota United FC on Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium. Stuver earns his second Team of the Matchday selection of the 2023 season, while Cascante earns his first.
Cascante became the first center back in MLS this season to tally two (2) assists in a single match, playing a key role in both of Austin’s goals. The Costa Rican found Adam Lundkvist on the left flank with a pinpoint pass in the 19th minute, who in turn put in a cross which Jon Gallagher volleyed home.
Cascante then outmuscled a number of Minnesota players following a long throw into the box, tapping the ball to an open Sebastián Driussi who scored the match-winning goal in the 82nd minute. In addition to his offensive contributions, Cascante recorded five (5) duels won, three (3) clearances, and two (2) interceptions on the night.
Stuver made six (6) saves, including several late in the game to preserve the 2-1 scoreline as Minnesota pushed for an equalizer. His 54 saves on the season rank third-most among all MLS goalkeepers.
