Austin FC Outlook
Austin FC got its first victory of the MLS season last time out against CF Montréal, courtesy of an 88th-minute match-winning goal from Maxi Urruti. The team also kept its first clean sheet of the season, with the Finnish pairing of Leo Väisänen and Alex Ring excelling as a center back duo.
With its first league road trip of 2023 on the horizon, Austin will look to recapture its strong road form from last year. The team won eight road matches, including four straight during a stretch in June and July. Its 26 points collected in away games tied for the most in the Western Conference.
Though the Verde & Black suffered a last-minute defeat in their away match in Utah last year, the team will have fond memories of playing RSL at Q2 Stadium in 2022. Austin’s 3-0 victory over RSL last September clinched the Club’s first-ever playoff berth, and Austin also triumphed in the MLS Cup Playoffs Round One meeting between the two.
Real Salt Lake Outlook
Like Austin, RSL won once and lost once in its opening two matches of the 2023 MLS campaign. Saturday’s match will be the team’s home opener, and Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s side is sure to be up for the task - not only to make a good first impression this season in front of their fans, but also to avenge last season’s defeats to the Verde & Black.
Two key players departed RSL this offseason in Sergio Córdova and Aaron Herrera, but Damir Kreilach is back to full fitness after missing most of 2022 through injury. He has 44 goals and 23 assists since joining RSL in 2018, and scored the match-winner in the team’s Week 1 game against Vancouver.
The team posed a tougher test for opponents when competing at home last year than it did away, picking up 32 of its 47 points at America First Field. The stadium is located at an elevation of 4,450 feet, making it the second-highest altitude venue in MLS and presenting an additional wrinkle for visiting teams to consider.
