Austin FC Outlook

Austin FC beat MLS newcomers San Diego FC 2-1 last Sunday afternoon, ending San Diego’s perfect road record and unbeaten start to the season.

Austin opened the scoring early in the 10th minute after Diego Rubio found Brandon Vazquez, and nine minutes later Gallagher doubled the lead with the help of another Owen Wolff assist. Wolff has assisted all three Austin FC match-winning goals thus far this season and earned a spot in the MLS Team of the Matchday for another strong performance.

Austin is currently sitting in second place in the MLS Western Conference. The VERDE & Black now set their sights on St. Louis and the potential for a third successive win. The team will be boosted by the return of Myrto Uzuni, Oleksandr Svatok, and Jimmy Farkarlun from international duty. Uzuni and Farkarlun both found the net for their countries while away.

Scoring chances may come at a premium on Sunday as Austin (three goals allowed) and St. Louis (one goal allowed) have so far had the two best defenses in the West.

St. Louis City SC Outlook

St. Louis is currently sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference with a record of 2-1-2 under new Head Coach Olof Mellberg.

Last weekend, City SC fell 1-0 against Philadelphia Union. It marked St. Louis’ first loss of the season. Midfielder Eduard Löwen was sent off in the 66th minute, meaning he will miss this weekend’s match vs. Austin. Prior to conceding vs. Philadelphia, St. Louis had secured two shutout wins against LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders after two back-to-back scoreless draws to start the season, tying an MLS record by beginning the season with four consecutive clean sheets.

Austin has never previously beaten St. Louis, a trend the VERDE & Black will be hungry to reverse on Sunday.
