Austin FC defender Julio Cascante was named to the Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday for his performance in Austin’s 2-1 home win over FC Dallas on Saturday night at Q2 Stadium. Cascante earns his first Team of the Matchday selection of the 2024 season.
Cascante played the full 90 minutes and scored his second goal of the season in the 54th minute. His towering header from a Jon Gallagher cross leveled the score just three (3) minutes after Austin had fallen behind.
He dominated in the air at the defensive end of the pitch as well, winning five (5) aerial duels and making two (2) headed clearances. Cascante also completed a game-high 70 passes at a 93 percent success rate and made two (2) interceptions.
During the week prior, Cascante had a pair of strong performances with the Costa Rican Men’s National Team, competing against Honduras and defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina. His contributions helped Los Ticos defeat Honduras 3-1 to qualify for Copa America 2024, a tournament in which Costa Rica will face Paraguay at Q2 Stadium on July 2.
