Austin FC defeated Pumas UNAM 3-2 last Friday night in front of a raucous home crowd, opening their 2024 Leagues Cup campaign in compelling style. Austin played majority of the match with 10 men following a red card for Osman Bukari, but that didn’t stop Austin from claiming the victory, courtesy of a stoppage time penalty save from goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland and goals from Alex Ring, Gyasi Zardes, and Sebastián Driussi.
The Verde & Black now shift their attention to their second Leagues Cup group stage game as they face another highly touted Liga MX side, CF Monterrey, at Q2 Stadium. Austin FC can officially advance to the Leagues Cup knockout rounds Tuesday night with either a win in regulation, or by advancing to penalty kicks.
CF Monterrey Outlook
CF Monterrey is currently sitting in 4th place in the Liga MX standings with four matches under their belt and a record of 3-0-1. Most recently, Pumas are coming off a 2-1 win against Querétaro on July 20, with goals scored by Joao Rojas and Germán Berterame.
Last year, in the inaugural Leagues Cup, CF Monterrey progressed all the way to the Leagues semi-finals, before suffering a 2-0 loss against MLS side Nashville SC. Following Tuesday night’s match against Austin FC, Monterrey will face Pumas UNAM in their group stage finale at Q2 Stadium on Saturday August 3rd.
