Austin FC Outlook

Last Saturday night at Q2 Stadium saw an eventful matchup against St. Louis CITY SC, as each team walked away with a point. Defenders Matt Hedges and Julio Cascante had another impactful performance, both finding the back of the net after strong showings in Seattle the previous week. Žan Kolmanič also picked up his first assist since returning from a season-ending ACL injury in 2023.

The Verde & Black now set their sights on Philadelphia Union, the team’s first game of the season against an Eastern Conference opponent. Since 2022, Austin has performed well against clubs from the East, with nine wins, four draws and only one loss.

Austin and the Union have never played in an official match but met back in January for a pre-season match resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Philadelphia Union Outlook

Philadelphia ended their 2023 MLS season in fourth place in the Eastern Conference and advanced to the semi-finals of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Union drew both of their first two MLS matches of 2024 vs. Chicago and Sporting KC, before being eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup last Tuesday night with a 6-0 defeat at Liga MX’S CF Pachuca.

Philadelphia now returns their full attention to league play, where they’ve consistently been one of the better sides in MLS over the last few seasons. The team’s top two goal producers from last season in Daniel Gazdag (14 goals, 11 assists) and Julian Carranza (14 goals, six assists) are both back with the team this season.

At the back, the Union are still anchored by Jamaican international goalkeeper Andre Blake, a four-time MLS All-Star and three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
