Austin FC Outlook
Austin FC will enter Saturday with a boost provided by Sebastián Driussi’s late winner on Wednesday night, which lifted the team over in-state rivals Houston. It was the team’s fourth consecutive home win and third Copa Tejas win in 2024, in front of the 60th consecutive sellout crowd at Q2 Stadium.
The Verde & Black also earned their fifth clean sheet of the season, and their fourth in the last five matches. The shutout was a result of the entire eleven’s work to limit attacking opportunities for the Dynamo, and Brad Stuver was once again excellent when called upon, adding to his league-leading save tally with several smart stops.
Austin now quickly turns its attention to Sporting Kansas City for their first match-up of the season on Saturday night. In the same fixture last summer, the Verde & Black defeated Sporting KC 2-1 thanks to goals two minutes apart from Gyasi Zardes and Ethan Finlay. Austin has won four of the last five meetings in the series with SKC and will be aiming for another win which could take the team as high as second in the Western Conference at the end of the week.
Sporting Kansas City Outlook
Sporting Kansas City currently occupies 13th place in the Western Conference standings with a 2-5-5 record, most recently falling to Houston Dynamo FC 2-1 last Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park. SKC’s home matches this season have been high-scoring affairs, as Head Coach Peter Vermes’ side has scored 14 goals and conceded 16 during matches on home turf.
The team’s away games are in sharp contrast though with just five goals scored and five conceded in five road matches. Even when taking a more pragmatic approach, Sporting’s attack has scored seven goals off set pieces this season, a fact Austin will be aware of heading into Saturday’s match.
Erik Thommy leads the way for SKC with four goals this season, while Willy Agada and Alan Pulido have contributed three each as well.
