Austin FC Outlook

Austin FC secured a 1-0 shutout victory against Portland Timbers on Wednesday night to keep the team alive in the hunt for an MLS Cup Playoff spot. Dani Pereira scored the game’s only goal with a shot from outside the penalty area which deflected in. Wednesday’s shutout marked Austin’s eighth clean sheet of the season and sixth on the road.

Brad Stuver made 11 saves in the win, setting a new single match career best and earning the Austin goalkeeper his fifth Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday selection this season. Midfielder Jhojan Valencia and center back Oleksandr Svatok also put in notably strong performances against the Timbers.

The Verde & Black now turn their attention to LA Galaxy to end the team’s double match week out West. The team will look to defeat the Galaxy for the second time this season, following a 2-0 win at Q2 Stadium back in April. Doing so, coupled with a Portland loss to Dallas on Sunday, would mean ATXFC would have a chance to reach the playoffs on MLS Decision Day in two weeks’ time.

LA Galaxy Outlook

LA Galaxy are coming off a 3-1 win against Colorado Rapids away at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday night. All three of LA’s goals came in the second half of the match, including a brace by Riqui Puig that turned a tie into a win. The Galaxy have now scored 15 goals in the last 15 minutes of second halves this season.

LA currently occupies first place in the Western Conference with an overall record of 18-7-7. The Galaxy have already punched their ticket to the playoffs and eclipsed the 60-point mark in a regular season for the first time since 2014 with the result in Colorado. As they did in Portland, the Verde & Black will have to defend well collectively to keep out a multi-pronged attack.

Puig, Joseph Paintsil, Dejan Joveljic, and Gabriel Pec all have double digit goals this year, and former German national team and Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus was a midseason addition. The Galaxy have scored the second most goals in MLS as a whole.
