Austin FC Outlook
Austin FC defeated CF Monterrey 2-0 last Tuesday night in front of a passionate home crowd, advancing to the Leagues Cup Round of 32 for the first time in club history. Goals by Jáder Obrian and Dani Pereira led Austin to victory, the team’s second win of the group stage against one of Liga MX’s top four teams at Q2 Stadium.
The Verde & Black now shift their attention to LAFC at BMO Stadium. The two previously met back on June 19 in MLS regular season play, in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. Sebastián Driussi found Obrian in the 19th minute of the match for the Verde & Black’s goal before Kei Kamara found the equalizer for LAFC in the 90th minute.
Austin FC can officially advance to the Leagues Cup round of 16 Wednesday night with a win in regulation or via a penalty shootout vs. LAFC, where they would face the winner of the match between Necaxa and San Jose Earthquakes.
LAFC Outlook
Though LAFC fell in penalties to Vancouver Whitecaps last time out, late goals from Kei Kamara and Mateusz Bogusz guaranteed that the team earned the point it needed to secure a top two finish in Group West 7. LA dominated Tijuana 3-0 in their opening game of this year’s tournament at BMO Stadium.
Last year, in the inaugural Leagues Cup, LAFC’s campaign ended at the Rose Bowl as they fell 3-2 in the quarterfinals to Monterrey. Denis Bouanga and Bogusz gave LAFC a fighting chance, putting the team ahead 2-0 in the first half. But Monterrey came back in the second half scoring three consecutive goals to end LAFC’s Leagues Cup run.
Austin has picked up one previous win at LAFC, a 2-1 victory in May 2022.
