Austin FC Outlook
Last Saturday night at Q2 Stadium saw an intense matchup against Philadelphia Union, as each team walked away with a point. Coming off a 1-0 deficit in the first half, the Verde & Black came out with renewed energy and equalized with a header from Diego Rubio, followed by a goal from Jon Gallagher two minutes later to give Austin the lead. Mikael Uhre hit the back of the net for the Union in the 65th minute, leading to the 2-2 draw.
Gallagher’s goal was his sixth since the start of the 2023 MLS season, the most of any defender in the league. His strong overall performance vs. Philadelphia earned him a spot in the MLS Team of the Matchday.
Austin FC captain Sebastián Driussi also returned from injury, making his season debut at the 71st minute. His presence is sure to offer the Verde & Black a boost as they set their sights on their second Eastern Conference matchup of the season.
Austin faced Orlando City SC back in 2022 at Q2 Stadium, ending in a 2-2 draw. After a difficult first half in which Austin fell behind 2-0, the Verde & Black mounted an impressive comeback thanks in part to a penalty kick by Driussi in the 65th minute.
Orlando City SC Outlook
Orlando suffered back-to-back losses last week, falling to Tigres UANL in the Champions Cup and a 2-0 shutout loss in Atlanta. The Lions are still looking for their first victory of the 2024 MLS season.
After finishing second in the Eastern Conference last season, the Lions added veteran striker Luis Muriel to the attack during the offseason. Facundo Torres led the team with 14 goals last season and remains one of its primary threats going forward, though Orlando will be without Duncan McGuire. The striker has scored the team’s only two MLS goals so far this season but will miss the meeting with Austin while away on international duty.
OCSC suffered only three losses at home throughout the entire 2023 season, but the Verde & Black will be buoyed by the fact that they avoided defeat in all three of their Eastern Conference away trips last season.
