Austin FC Outlook

Austin FC opened its season with a 1-0 shutout home win against Sporting Kansas City last Saturday night at Q2 Stadium. Austin controlled the game in terms of possession and positioning, and ultimately Osman Bukari found the back of the net late in the second half on a corner kick assist from Owen Wolff. The victory improved Austin’s all-time record against SKC at Q2 Stadium to 5-0-0.

The VERDE & Black now face their first away test of the new season in the Pacific Northwest vs. Portland Timbers on Saturday night. Though Providence Park is a notoriously difficult venue for traveling teams, Austin FC secured results there on each of its last two visits: a 1-0 win last October thanks to a Dani Pereira goal, and a comeback 2-2 draw in 2023.

Only on five other occasions in MLS history has a visiting opponent in Portland avoided defeat in three consecutive seasons, a feat Austin will aim to replicate.

Portland Timbers Outlook

Portland Timbers qualified for the last spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs last season, finishing in ninth place in the Western Conference but falling to Vancouver Whitecaps in the Wild Card match.

The Timbers had a tough start to their 2025 MLS campaign, going down to 10 men in the 11th minute of their matchup against Vancouver and falling to a 4-1 defeat. Portland will be without defender Kamal Miller Saturday night following his red card in that match.

Portland will be boosted by the arrival of offseason Designated Player signing David da Costa though, who offered a spark when coming off the bench for his debut last weekend. He spent the last four seasons with French Ligue 1 side RC Lens, where he made 123 appearances (63 starts) with 11 goals and 17 assists.
