Austin FC Outlook

Austin FC fell 1-0 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at the end of August ahead of the international break. Vancouver’s Ryan Gauld was able to break through in the 70th minute, scoring the only goal of the night for the visitors. Despite the defeat, Austin has still been in decent form having won three of its last five matches.

Austin now turns its attention to Toronto FC for the first of two back-to-back away matches. The only previous meeting between the two was early in the 2023 regular season, when Gyasi Zardes scored a dramatic late winner in a 1-0 victory in front of the south end at Q2 Stadium. Austin has a record of 11-6-2 against Eastern Conference teams since the start of 2022.

A win against Toronto could potentially lift the Verde & Black back above the playoff line ahead of Austin’s double match week next week.

Toronto FC Outlook

Toronto FC’s last match on August 31st ended in a 1-3 loss against D.C. United at BMO Field. The Reds’ sole goal came from a header by forward Deandre Kerr in the 83rd minute, marking his 15th career goal for TFC.

Toronto FC is currently in 8th place in the Eastern Conference, with a 10-15-3 overall record. Toronto has had a rollercoaster season so far but are currently sitting above the playoff line as Decision Day approaches.

It’ll be crucial for the Verde & Black to take advantage of Toronto’s struggling defense. The Reds’ 1.8 goals conceded per match is among the most in MLS. Another key will be keeping former Italian international Federico Bernardeschi quiet, who leads the team in both goals and assists.
