Austin FC Outlook
Last Saturday, goals from Diego Rubio and Jáder Obrian lifted Austin FC to a 2-0 victory over LA Galaxy on Saturday afternoon at Q2 Stadium. With that result, no team in MLS has more points in its last five matches than Austin’s 12. Head Coach Josh Wolff and Obrian earned the Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday honors for their roles in the victory.
The Verde & Black now turn their attention to a trip north of the border for their match against Whitecaps FC. The team will look to build on the defensive solidity it has shown as of late, having kept shutouts in each of its last three matches. Brad Stuver’s league-leading 51 saves have helped Austin frustrate oppositions.
Though in seventh place, Austin is currently just three points away from first place in the West, and two points behind Vancouver in third. A third consecutive win for Coach Wolff’s side coupled with favorable results elsewhere could see Austin finish the weekend at or near the top of the table.
Vancouver Whitecaps Outlook
Vancouver is off to a hot start to the season with a 5-2-2 record, having most recently drawn 1-1 away to New York Red Bulls last Saturday. The attack has been the difference maker thus far, as the Whitecaps are currently the only team in MLS to have scored in every match. Their +8 goal difference is tied with Real Salt Lake for second best in the league, two behind Inter Miami CF.
Brian White and Ryan Gauld are forming a formidable duo up top. White has five goals and two assists, while Gauld has chipped in three goals and two assists of his own. White’s equalizing goal vs. New York made him Vancouver’s all-time leading scorer in their MLS era.
While BC Place is no easy place to play, the ‘Caps have picked up more points on the road than at home this year, with their only two defeats both coming on home turf. Austin will look to continue that trend and earn their second road result of the year in the Pacific Northwest, following a scoreless draw vs. Seattle back in March.
