Austin FC today announced that the brand-new CapMetro McKalla Station will officially open for public use on Saturday, February 24, the same day Austin FC kicks off its first home match of the 2024 Major League Soccer season at 7:30 p.m. CT. The station is directly adjacent to Q2 Stadium and is connected directly to the stadium by bike and foot paths.
To celebrate the opening of the station, CapMetro Rail customers will enjoy fare-free rides on Saturday courtesy of Q2 Stadium.
“This transformational addition to our neighborhood and matchday experience is the result of remarkable collaboration and commitment from our partners at City of Austin, CapMetro, Project Connect, and Austin Transit Partnership,” said Austin FC President Andy Loughnane. “Having Q2 Stadium be directly accessible via easy-to-use, environmentally friendly public transportation is a gamechanger for our club, our fans, and our community.”
The commissioning of McKalla Station represents the successful culmination of a master transit plan that was put into place in 2018. The station, which is located along the CapMetro Red Line, features two (2) platforms with a third event platform. Several trains will be staged on the tracks on days where events are held at Q2 Stadium, and trains will depart frequently until the platforms are clear of passengers. CapMetro will continue to stage route 803 buses along Bright Verde Way for egress.
“This is a huge win for our community and we’re proud to deliver this Project Connect investment on time and on budget,” said Dottie Watkins, President & CEO of CapMetro. "McKalla Station represents our commitment to providing accessible, convenient, and sustainable transit options. The new station creates more opportunities for connectivity, economic prosperity, and enhanced mobility that will support our growing area region for years to come.”
The station will be officially opened with ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, February 24. Information for media looking to attend the ribbon-cutting event will be communicated later this week by CapMetro.
