Two (2) substitutes combined for a late goal to lift Austin FC to a 1-0 away victory over Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium, as CJ Fodrey set up Emiliano Rigoni for an 86th-minute match-winning goal. The assist was the first of Fodrey’s MLS career, and the victory means Austin has now won 6 of 9 all-time meetings against Houston.
Houston turned on the pressure early, and Brendan Hines-Ike made a crucial block in the 7th minute to prevent the hosts from taking the lead. The Verde & Black then quickly found their footing, creating three (3) quality chances of their own. The Dynamo responded with an opportunity just before halftime, but a strong save from Brad Stuver kept Houston out. Stuver continued to be solid throughout the game, making six (6) saves in total while keeping his second clean sheet of the season.
As the second half wore on, Head Coach Josh Wolff made several substitutions which helped turn the tide of the match in Austin’s favor. In the final moments, Fodrey’s flicked header played Rigoni in behind the Houston defense, and the Argentine’s accurate low finish to the far post ensured that the Verde & Black claimed all three (3) points.
